Video 1 - Definition of Myth
It starts by saying are myths historical facts or deliberate fictions. We really can't say for sure whether these events happened or not and these are still argued today. So we have to realize when going over these myths or literary artifacts it should just be interpreted as a lesson. The bible is a great example of how many people interpret it differently. The definition of myth is that a story is false and not to be taken seriously but many have been taken seriously. Myth comes from the Greek word Mythos which means story. The main components of myths for this video is significance and staying power. Theres two versions of myths one with Gods and ones without supernatural events. The first example story is about Persephone the daughter of Zeus. Zeus brother captures Persephone to make her his wife. Eventually in the underworld she was told to eat 6 seeds which she did so she would spend half in underworld with Hades and half above where since nothing was growing it would be cold and thats why we have Winter.
Video 2 - Theories of Mythology
Early church thinkers made platonic sense as myth being falsehood which made Greek and Roman myths be influenced by demons. This prepared other church thinks to listen to their story of Jesus. "Mythos" was associated with falsehood, and "logos" meant for Christians the truth. Then it moves to Anthropology which was the study of these stories and how they would've happened in real life. Many anthropologists talked to actual human beings to confirm these stories passed down. Psychology also used the myths to show that these are projections of the unconscious. These unconscious thoughts were thought to be universal in which case had a meaning for all.
Video 3 - Heroes of Myths
Theres many definitions for a hero do they fight villains, are they a role model, or just a leader? One theory is that heroes tell us something about ourselves. Margaret Divini stated we are all heroes struggling to accomplish our adventure as human beings in which we engage in a series of struggles to develop as individuals to find our place in society and long for wisdom. It is believed by some these are written by authors instead they are manifestations. Normally the hero receives a call of destiny and refuses the call usually but then realize it's their destiny and strive to fulfill it. Then there is always an enemy they must overcome. Finally they reach their destiny and are fulfilled by what they were suppose to be shaped by all the trials they just went through and adversary or "temptations." It is also inferred that the monster is shaped by there father figure so you have to overcome your father to reach the destiny. Eventually they reach the end and this is seen as the happily ever after in these myths.
